Next a 5th grader named Dot tried out. She is a pleasing person but not the best at singing, which was a relief to me.

This morning, I made Melonhead and Jonique leave for school ultra-early so we could be 1st to see the Cast List but when we got there, no doors were opened so Melonhead ran off to balance on the top edge of the monkey bars before any teachers could see and tell him to get off because of it being against school rules, not to mention he could break his neck. That's a mistake teachers make. The thing about Melonhead is that if something's neck-breaking he wants to do it even more.

“Are you nervous?” Jonique asked me.

“More excited. I already feel like I'm Annie,” I said.

“I'm afraid I won't get to be an orphan,” she said.

“You will,” I told her. “I hope you are one that gets to swing a bucket during ‘It's the Hard-Knock Life.' “

“Or dance with a mop,” Jonique said. “It would be fun to be a dancing, mopping orphan.”

Then we stopped talking on account of Ashley was coming right at us.

“Are you waiting to see the Cast List?” she asked us.

“Yes,” I said.

Then, after all the kid actors from all the grades were in a clump around us, Ashley said in her biggest voice: “Lucy Rose, do you REALLY think you'll get to be Annie?”

“I do think it,” I said. But not in my biggest voice.

Just then Mr. Welsh came out and made a speech about everybody being a good actor and how it was hard to choose and how we should all congratulate each other. Then we all zipped inside and ran about 36 miles an hour, only Ashley pushed and got in front. By the time I got there she had a snarky look. I figured she was wild with anger about not being Annie so I made a friendly smile to show that I have sympathy for that.

Then I looked at the list. Right at the top it said: Annie. And next to Annie it said: Ashley. I started crying so hard it felt like I couldn't stop, plus my hands were shaking from grief and all I felt was embarrassed to miserable pieces. Then Ashley hollered, “Hey, Lucy Rose! Why don't you make some MORE Annie posters? Only this time, starring ME.”

“Let's go,” Jonique said and pulled me by my arms.

We sat on the library bench and Mrs. Ochmanek gave me tissues and water and Jonique told me, “You were the best.”

“I feel the worst,” I told her.

“Don't feel bad,” she said. “I'm not on the orphan list.”

For the whole morning I could not pay one speck of attention until Mrs. Timony said I should stay in for recess.

That's when she said: “You look awfully sad.”

“I am,” I said. “Awfully.”

“You wanted to be Annie?” Mrs. Timony said.

“Like you can't believe,” I told her.

“I can believe,” she said and hugged my shoulders. “But are you at all happy with the way things turned out?”

Which made me think she had lost her brains.
